Keating & Stone Gem Workshop
Audience: Adults
From Metallurgy and Gemmology to the chemistry of alloys, and the physics of light reflection and refraction; the science behind ‘jewellery making’ is fascinating. In this ‘Science of Jewellery Workshop’ not only will you make some fabulous pieces of jewellery, but you will also discover some of the scientific aspects that lie beneath the art of jewellery making.
Find out how “Light” is used as a means of gemstone identification. The optical properties of gemstones such as refraction and dispersion play a significant role in how they interact with light. And you will have the opportunity to test some gems with the scientific equipment used by gemmologists to determine a gems authenticity.
Then by creating a chemical reaction between resin and hardener – to form a virtually indestructible bond – you will create a durable medium in which to fashion your own unique pendant and bracelet. You can also rejuvenate any old pieces of jewellery or broken watches by incorporating them into your resin design.
Then best bit is, you get to keep what you make!
